Why brands should own a Roblox world, not rent one

- Player Promo

Short answer: renting space on Roblox - a free item drop or a branded corner of someone else's game - buys you a spike. Owning a persistent world buys you an audience that comes back every week, data you control and revenue you keep. From January 2027 Roblox also starts charging for brand integrations by the visit, which changes the maths further.

What does "renting" mean on Roblox?

Most brand activity on Roblox has been one of three things:

  • Free or paid avatar items - a shirt, a hat, a limited drop.
  • Integrations - paying the owners of an existing popular game to add your brand for a few weeks.
  • One-off event worlds - a build tied to a single launch, with no plan for what happens afterwards.

All three can work as campaigns. None of them leaves you with anything when the campaign ends. The players belong to someone else's game, the relationship ends when the integration does, and next season you start again from zero.

What does "owning" mean?

An owned world is a persistent Roblox experience published under your brand and run like a live product: regular updates, events tied to your calendar, items that fans collect over time, and an audience that grows each season instead of resetting.

It's the difference between buying a billboard and opening a venue.

Why integrations have been winning - and why that's changing

Integrations got popular for a good reason. Industry tracking from GEEIQ found brand-owned world launches fell 57% year on year while integrations rose 14%, because too many brands built worlds and then didn't run them. An empty world is worse than no world.

But the cost of integrations is rising. From 1 January 2027, Roblox charges a fee on brand integrations priced per 1,000 visits by player location - $1.50 in the US, $0.75 in the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the Nordics, $0.20 in Japan, Western Europe and South Korea, and $0.05 elsewhere - for the first 28 days, then a flat $0.10 worldwide. (We break this down in Roblox's 2027 brand integration fees, explained.)

That fee is a cost of renting attention. It makes the long-term economics of owning a world - which you'd operate for years - look a lot stronger.

The lesson from the NFL

The NFL is the best public case study. Its own purpose-built Roblox games underperformed - Super NFL Tycoon closed in February 2025 - while its biggest win came from licensing its brand into an existing hit football game, NFL Universe Football, which has passed 970 million visits.

The takeaway isn't "don't own". It's "start with a game players already want, then make it yours". Branded builds fail when they start with the logo. They work when they start with a proven mechanic.

What a good owned world needs

  1. A proven core loop. Build on mechanics with a track record on Roblox - sport, tycoon, roleplay, obby, collecting - not a brand tour.
  2. An operating plan, not just a launch. Roblox's discovery now favours games people come back to, so updates every few weeks and scheduled live events matter as much as the build.
  3. Your calendar, in-world. Kit launches, fixtures, release dates, signings and seasons become content.
  4. A revenue case before you commit. Avatar items, in-game purchases and partner inventory - modelled with stated assumptions.
  5. Safety from day one. Built to the right Roblox content tier, with no gambling mechanics. See Roblox age checks and safety.

When renting still makes sense

Integrations are a good way to test an audience or amplify a launch - especially in the first few weeks of a new world. The strongest plans use both: own the world, and rent attention to fill it at the key moments.

FAQ

Is it expensive to build an owned Roblox world? It depends on the size of the world. Most can launch with a focused core and grow in phases, so cost lines up with results.

Who owns the game and the IP? You should. Insist that everyone working on the build signs an IP assignment.

How long until it pays back? That's what a revenue case is for. Ask any studio you speak to for conservative, base and upside numbers, with every assumption written down.
